Where can natural fiber rugs be used?

First a word about where natural fiber rugs are unsuitable:

  • Natural fibers should not be used outdoors.
  • Natural fibers should not be used in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, or other damp or humid environments.
  • Natural fibers should not be used on stairs. The surface may be smooth enough to allow leather soles to slip.
  • Exposure to direct sunlight will tend to fade the material.

Having said that, natural fiber floors are great in most rooms of the house. Family and living rooms, dens, offices, bedrooms, and halls all work well with natural fiber rugs. Dining rooms are prone to spills, and we are a bit reticent about recommending their use there.

Are samples of the weaves and bindings available?

Yes they are, and we highly recommend that you request samples before ordering. The rugs we offer have great texture and color that, no matter how hard we try, do not look quite as good on the computer. You should see a few to compare the feel , the weight and color. Also, getting a few bindings that interest you may help you choose between colors and decide on a binding width that works for you.

You can order samples by navigating to any item that you like. On the order page are links to our sample ordering page for the weaves and for the bindings displayed on that page.

Please note that these are natural products and variations occur between lots due to seasonal harvesting times, fluctuations in the weather from harvest to harvest, and other differences. The final rug you receive may differ in color and texture from the sample. Also, the characteristics of these plant fibers change subtly throughout the length of the fiber. This will result in variations in color, and texture and even pattern irregularity within our rugs. This is especially true of the Marine and Bengal collections. These natural variations help give our rugs their distinctively natural look, and most of our customers appreciate that.

Do the rugs have backing, and will my rug need a rug pad?

All of the rugs we offer are backed with a latex backing, except for Bamboo which is backed in jute. The backing provides dimensional stability and a non-skid surface. No further padding is required.

Are the rugs available for wall-to-wall installation?

All of our rugs, except Karuna in the Koko Collection, the Bengal Collection, and the Marine Collection, are available for wall to wall installation. We recommend a direct glue-down application using our adhesive formulated for natural fibers. We strongly recommend that you contact a floor covering installer with experience installing natural fiber carpet material before placing your order. We ship a complete installation manual with your order. Call if you need one in advance to review with your installer.

The Adirondack Collection rugs are available in 12’ widths, all other rugs are available in 13’1" width. The rugs we offer on these pages are backed with a latex material which helps provide dimensional stability and a non-skid surface. Further padding is unnecessary.

We can generally ship in-stock orders of broadloom cuts within 5 business days. We do not offer this service online. Please contact us with your requirements, and we will expedite your order. At this time, payment is required by check.

Can I get a custom size or shape rug?

Custom rugs can be cut to most sizes or shapes.

  • In circles and ovals we are limited to our narrow cotton binding, and if the radius is too tight we may not be able to accommodate you as the binding will not lay flat.
  • With octagons we recommend mitered corners.
  • We can accommodate hearth cut-outs, and L-shaped rugs, however, we cannot offer these in leather due to the inside corner
  • Something custom. Give us a shot. We will be happy to try and accommodate your needs. Just be forewarned- your rug may show up on these pages someday!

We do not offer this service online. Please contact us with your requirements, and we will quote your order. Payment is required by check or money order.

Can I use my own fabric in a binding or get customized bindings?

Yes. Generally, we can use your material for a binding, but we need to see a sample before we can commit.

For customizing our bindings –just ask. We are most often asked for the following:

  • Varying binding colors so that a different color can be on each of the four sides.
  • Double Binding. In this application, we use two different bindings on each side. Double bound rugs require mitered corners.
  • Linen Piping. This is a great look for a double bound application.

We do not offer this service online at this time. Please contact us with your requirements, and we will work with you to quote your project, and , if necessary to check your custom fabric. Payment is required by check or money order.

What is Siseal?

Siseal is a fabric and textile protectorant. It helps to decrease the absorbency of the weaves and bindings so spills tend to bead-up for a bit, and soils aren’t as readily absorbed. It is not a guaranteed protection from staining. Some stains will eat right through it, and if you leave anything on long enough it will absorb. It does provide a small measure of protection to your rug that we believe is well worth the cost. For a lot of spills, Siseal gives you time to run into the kitchen to grab some paper towels to quickly blot it up.
