About our Natural Fibers back to FAQ Page
Sisal rugs are made from sisal- a strong, stable and versatile material. Sisal rugs and carpets are naturally sound-absorbing, anti-static, and extremely durable because of the inherent qualities of this tough, hard-wearing fiber. It is also naturally insulating and difficult to ignite. Like most plant fibers, however, sisal absorbs moisture readily, therefore we recommend that these materials be used only indoors, in dry areas of a home or office.back to top
Sisal rug fiber is obtained from the Agave plant which grows in sub-tropical regions around the world. Ours comes from Brazilian sisal plantations. These plantations produce the world's highest quality sisal with the longest, finest, and whitest fibers. The high quality of our fibers allow the sisal to be spun into smooth textured yarn, and woven into broadloom on modern power looms.
Seagrass rugs are woven from seagrass - a salt marsh grass grown in paddy fields primarily in Southeast Asia. Our seagrass is imported directly from China. Seagrass reeds are thick and rigid. The skin is non-porous and smooth to the touch and gives a slight natural sheen. After harvesting the long strands of seagrass are dried and spun into yarns. The yarns are then woven into a variety of designs to produce a smooth broadloom with a long lasting finish. Seagrass is only available in its natural color, which has an organic, green cast and becomes less green overtime. Seagrass is the most stain resistant fiber we offer. Seagrass rugs or carpet are undyed, therefore they will show natural variations in color. Under very moist conditions Seagrass can be susceptible to mold and mildew.back to top
Hemp Rugs
Hemp rugs are woven from hemp or mountain grass - a durable grass grown in the highland fields of China. Hemp grass is thick and rigid with a wood like apearance. The skin is non-porous and smooth to the touch and gives a slight natural sheen. After harvesting the long strands of grass are dried and spun into yarns. The yarns are then woven into a variety of designs to produce a smooth broadloom with a long lasting finish. Hemp grass is only available in its natural earth tone colors.back to top
